GEM-500 Easy Steps

The following steps assume the use of DataField CS 3.0 or greater.
Steps to Clear Memory from Instrument (GEM-500)
- Turn on GEM-500
- Press 0 to go to Main Menu
- Press 1 General Utilities
- Press 9 More
- Press 4 Memory
- To Clear Readings Press 1
- If you wish to proceed, Enter 0102
- Press 0 Exit to Clear
- If you wish to Clear ID Info, Press 2
- If you wish to proceed, Enter 0102
- Press 0 Exit to Clear
- Press 0 to Exit
Create New IDs
- Start DataField 3.0 CS software
- Plug in instrument, turn on instrument and choose option 4 Download Data when instructed to by the software.
- Once communication is established a screen layout will be created specifically for the GEM-500.
- Click on the ID button
- Enter ID
- Info/Desc
- Pipe Diameter
- Flow Device
- Click "SAVE" and save the file with a project name
- Click "SEND TO INSTRUMENT"
Steps to Calibrate Methane CH4
It's important to field calibrate the GEM-500 on-site after the instrument has stabilized at working temperature.
- Turn Instrument GEM-500 On.
- Press 0 to go to Main Menu
- Press 1 General Utilities
- Press 9 More
- Press 6 Calibration
- Press 1 CH4, from Calibrate Gas Type Menu
- Press 1 to Zero CH4 Methane
- Connect the tubing from the Calibration Gas Regulator / Flow Meter to the GEM-500 Gas Sample Port
- Note: If not using LANDTEC's supplied regulator, check the Calibration Gas Flow at 500cc and Pressure no greater than 2psig
Turn On the Gas Mixture 02
- Press 5 to turn pump On
- Once the readings have stabilized (1 Minute Approximately)...
- Press 1 Zero Level
- Turn Off 02 Gas Valve, and Disconnect from GEM-500 Port
- Press 5 again to turn Pump Off
- Press 0 Exit to return to the Methane Calibration Screen
- Press 2 Calibrate CH4 Span
- Connect the Tubing from the Calibration Gas Regulator / Flow Meter to the GEM-500 Gas Sample Port
- Note: If Not using LANDTEC's supplied regulator, check the Calibration Gas Flow at 500cc and Pressure no greater than 2psig
- Turn On the Calibration Gas Mixture of CH4/CO2.
- Press 5 Turn On Pump
- Allow Readings to Stabilize (1 Minute Approximately)
- Press 1 Enter Gas Con
- Enter the Gas Concentration as indicated on your CH4 / CO2 Nitrogen Gas Cylinder
- Press 0 to Exit
- Press 1 Yes
- If Calibration OK accepted, then Turn Off Calibration Gas Cylinder
- Remove Gas Hose attached to Gas Sample Port
- Keep Pump running to purge Instrument (1 minute Approximately).
- Press 5 for Pump Off
- Press 0 to Exit
Steps to Calibrate Oxygen O2
- Press 3 O2 from Calibrate Gas Type Menu
- Press 1 Zero 02
- Connect the Tubing from the Calibration Gas Regulator / Flow Meter to the GEM-500 Gas Sample Port
- Note: If not using LANDTEC's Regulator, Gas Flow should be 500cc and Pressure 2psig
- Turn On the Calibration Gas Mixture of CH4/CO2
- Press 5 Turn On Pump
- Once the readings have stabilized (1 Minute Approximately)
- Press 1 Zero Level
- Keep Pump running for 60 Seconds to Purge Instrument
- Press 5 Pump Off
- Press 0 to Exit
- Press 2 Calibrate O2 Span
- Change the Calibration Gas Mixture to Oxygen/Nitrogen and Connect it to the GEM-500 Sample Port
- Note: If not using LANDTEC's Regulator, Gas Flow should be 500cc and Pressure 2psig
- Turn On the Calibration Gas Mixture O2/Nitrogen
- Press 5 Pump On
- Allow O2 readings to stabilize
- Press 1 Enter Gas Con
- Enter Gas Concentration as indicated on your Oxygen / Nitrogen Gas Cylinder
- Press 0 to Exit
- Press 1 Yes
- Turn Off Calibration Gas
- Disconnect 02/Nitrogen Gas Cylinder from GEM-500 Port
- Press 5 Pump Off
- Press 0 to Exit
Steps to Perform Readings
- Turn On Instrument
- Press 0 to go to Main Menu
- Press 2 Read Gas Levels
- Press 1 Read using ID?
- Press 1 (If you want to Scroll)
- Press 2 (If you want to Enter Manually)
- (If you Scroll), Press UP or Down Arrows and #2 to Select
- Press 1 to Read
- Press 5 Pump On
- Allow Readings on left side of the screen to become stable
- Press 5 Pump Off
- To record Temperature and Probe Depth, Press 2 More
- Press 1 to Enter Temperature
- After Entering Temperature, Press 0 to Exit
- Press 3 to Zero Pressure
- Note: Disconnect hose before zeroing, Then Press any key
- Press 1 to Zero Pressures
- Press 0 to Exit
- Note: Reconnect hose. Allow the Instrument to read
- Press 2 Continue
- If the Flow needs to be changed adjust the control valve on the Well head.
- Press 6 to Store
- Press 1 or 6 to scroll Up or Down Comments
- To select a Comment, Press 2
- Press 0 to Store
- If you want to go to Next ID then,
- Press 4 to go to Next ID
- Press 2 to Purge
- Note: Warning: Disconnect Hose from the Well
- Press 1 to Begin Purging
- Press 0 to Back
- Press 0 to Exit Purge
- Press 1 for Next ID
- Begin Reading Process Again!
Steps to Download Readings to Datafield
- Start DataField 3.0CS software
- Plug in instrument, turn on instrument and choose option 4 Download Data when instructed to by the software.
- Once communication is established a screen layout will be created specifically for the GEM-500 instrument.
- Click on the readings button
- Click on the button labeled "Load From Instrument"
- The readings will be transferred from the GEM to the computer.
- Click on the Save File button to save the readings from Datafield 3.0CS to a file.
- Hint: be sure to end the file name with a .CSV (this will assist with opening the file in Excel)
